Munira Wilson MP has introduced a bill in parliament aimed at strengthening UK regulations on PFAs, or ‘forever chemicals’. She cited the stretch of the River Thames near Teddington in her constituency, which was reported to have a concentration of PFAs 11 times above the safe levels set out by EU legislation.
PFAs are part of the broad spectrum of micropollutants our new ozone wastewater plants in the Severn Trent region are designed to remove. Ozone is both highly effective and environmentally sustainable, and is already used in countries like Switzerland which have pioneered the removal of PFAs from wastewater.
It’s clear that Europe and the US are leading the way both with both regulation and infrastructure when it comes to tackling PFAs and other micropollutants. It’s important that we in the UK do the same. We hope this bill is part of a broader effort to safeguard our waterways from micropollutants in the near future.
