The UK REACH compliance process for ozone use has progressed to the substance registration phase and Curio Water is leading the way by assisting UK water companies with the preparation and submission of their registration dossiers. It is now inviting other UK ozone producers to engage for support in navigating the regulatory requirements.
Since the establishment of UK REACH on 1 January 2021, following the UK’s departure from the European Union, companies seeking approval to use ozone in oxidation treatment processes for water and wastewater have been required to register and submit a dossier of information to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The registration process, driven by Curio acting as independent and specialist consultants and supported by EurO3zon — a body formed to facilitate the transition from EU to UK regulations — has proved challenging due to the specialist nature of the HSE data submission requirements coupled with the uncertainty and complexity of regulatory procedures following Brexit.
To address the challenges of compliance, Curio has developed a comprehensive, standardised methodology for the dossier production and application procedure in collaboration with water scientists and key industry stakeholders, whilst also providing support on the legal and licensing requirements associated with registration.
This first step formally establishes companies as ozone manufacturers and links them to EurO3zon, the lead registrant which manages the essential data analysis and evaluation in support of all submitted dossiers. Each dossier submission places the applicant into a joint working group that will progress through the regulatory pathway together.
This approach enables water companies, and other ozone producers, to navigate the application process more efficiently while ensuring consistent compliance with the stringent safety and environmental standards required under UK REACH ozone compliance.
A call to other ozone producers
The new UK REACH ozone legislation does not only apply to the water industry. Curio is now calling on other ozone producers — across industries such as pulp and paper bleaching, swimming pool treatment, laminating and coating, sludge reduction, ozone generator testing, mineral and drinking water ozonation, off-gas treatment, soil and groundwater remediation, wastewater ozonation, textiles and laundry, ozonolysis, and the semiconductor industry (including ultrapure water production) — to contact Curio for guidance.
Existing ozone producers, or any company planning to develop ozone generation and treatment facilities, can contact Curio to receive information about fulfilling UK REACH ozone compliance requirements.
